There’s a moment we see almost every week at Burnaby South Dental, our clinic at 6975 Kingsway in Highgate. A patient comes in with a tooth that’s been filled two or three times over the years, or one that cracked on a popcorn kernel, or one that just finished a root canal — and they ask the same question: “Can’t you just fill it again?”
Sometimes we can. But when a tooth has lost too much of its natural structure, a filling is like patching a crumbling wall — it fills the hole without holding the wall together. That’s when we recommend a dental crown: a custom-made cap that covers the entire tooth, restoring its strength, shape, and appearance.
If you’ve been told you need a crown in Burnaby — or you suspect a tooth is heading that way — here’s everything you need to know before you sit in the chair.
What Exactly Is a Dental Crown?
A crown is a custom-fitted cover that fits over your whole tooth above the gumline, like a helmet. Once cemented in place, it functions and looks like a natural tooth — you eat with it, brush it, and after a few weeks most patients forget which tooth it’s on.
Modern crowns are typically made from:
- Porcelain or ceramic — the most natural-looking option, ideal for front teeth
- Zirconia — extremely strong and still tooth-coloured, great for molars
- Porcelain fused to metal (PFM) — a durable middle ground
- Gold alloy — rarely requested these days, but exceptionally long-lasting
At our Highgate clinic, we’ll recommend the material based on which tooth needs the crown, how hard you bite, and your budget — not a one-size-fits-all answer.
5 Signs a Tooth Needs a Crown, Not Another Filling
- A large filling is failing. When more than half the tooth is filling material, there isn’t enough natural tooth left to hold a new one.
- The tooth is cracked. Cracks spread under chewing pressure. A crown holds the tooth together before a crack reaches the root — at which point the tooth often can’t be saved.
- You’ve had a root canal. A root-canaled back tooth becomes brittle over time. A crown protects it from fracturing — it’s the standard finishing step after most root canals.
- The tooth is badly worn. Years of teeth grinding can flatten teeth to the point they need rebuilding.
- A tooth is misshapen or discoloured and bothers you every time you see photos of yourself.
If any of these sound familiar, don’t wait for the tooth to break. A planned crown is far cheaper — and far more comfortable — than an emergency visit for a fractured tooth.
What Does a Dental Crown Cost in Burnaby?
In BC, a single crown typically ranges from about $1,200 to $1,800, depending on the material and the complexity of the tooth. That number can feel steep — until you compare it to the alternative. A tooth that fractures beyond repair usually means an extraction followed by a dental implant, which costs several times more.
A few things that affect your final cost:
- Material — zirconia and all-ceramic crowns sit at the higher end
- Which tooth — molars take more bite force and may need stronger materials
- Extra work needed — a build-up or post adds to the fee if the tooth is badly broken down
Insurance: most extended health plans in BC cover 50% of major restorative work like crowns, subject to your annual maximum. We check your coverage and give you a written estimate before any work starts — no surprises.
CDCP patients: crowns may be covered under the Canadian Dental Care Plan with preauthorization. We’re happy to accept CDCP at Burnaby South Dental and can handle the paperwork with you.
What to Expect: The Crown Procedure Step by Step
Getting a crown usually takes two visits to our Highgate clinic:
Visit 1 (about 60–90 minutes). We numb the tooth completely, gently reshape it to make room for the crown, take a precise impression, and place a temporary crown. You’ll drive home from Kingsway feeling normal — just avoid chewing gum on that side for a couple of weeks.
Visit 2 (about 30 minutes). Once your custom crown comes back from the lab, we remove the temporary, check the fit and your bite, make any fine adjustments, and cement it permanently.
Does it hurt? Honestly — no. The tooth is fully frozen for the reshaping, and most patients say the hardest part is keeping their mouth open. If dental visits make you nervous, tell us. Gentle, anxiety-aware care is something our whole team takes seriously.
How Long Do Crowns Last?
With good care, 10 to 15 years is typical — and many crowns last 20 or more. The crown itself doesn’t decay, but the tooth underneath still can, right at the gumline where crown meets tooth. To get the most from yours:
- Brush twice a day and floss around the crown daily
- Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth (grinding is the #1 crown killer we see)
- Don’t chew ice or open packages with your teeth
- Keep your regular checkups so we can catch small problems at the margins early
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a crown in one visit?
Some clinics offer same-day milled crowns; the traditional lab-made route we use takes two visits but allows meticulous fit and shade-matching. Ask us what’s right for your case.
Will my crown look fake?
No. Modern ceramic and zirconia crowns are shade-matched to your surrounding teeth. For front teeth, we take extra care with translucency so the crown blends in even in bright light.
Is a crown better than pulling the tooth?
Almost always yes. Nothing we can make is as good as your natural tooth root. Keeping the tooth preserves your bite, your jawbone, and your budget.
Do kids ever need crowns?
Yes — stainless steel crowns are common for baby molars with large cavities. They fall out naturally with the baby tooth.
Think You Might Need a Crown? Let’s Take a Look
A tooth that needs a crown rarely announces itself politely — it’s usually a crack line, a lost filling, or a dull ache that comes and goes. The earlier we see it, the more of your natural tooth we can save.
